We recommend to arrive 10 minutes early.  We have set aside visitor parking at our main entrance. Seniors and those who require accessible parking will also find designated spots reserved for them. Our parking lot fills quickly, so additional parking can be found on the west side of the church by Bates Place Neighbors. Street parking is also available. By entering through the main doors, you will be greeted by current First Church members who would be glad to help out with any questions you may have. Straight ahead down the hall is where you can sign in your kids in children's ministry. Next, you will want to head up the main stairway to enter the Sanctuary for our Worship Service.  We welcome anything you feel comfortable worshipping in! We are not concerned with what you are wearing, we're very glad you decided to join us!  While no two Sundays are exactly alike, here are some things you can count on about worship at First Church. The Word of God centers our worship services. We seek his revelation! We blend contemporary and traditional songs led by our Praise Team. Our services typically are between 60 and 90 minutes long. We have children's programs for ages 0 to 2nd grade! We have a nursery, Little Lambs room (toddlers), and Children's Worship rooms (Pre-K to 2nd grade). Be sure to check them in just down the hall past the Welcome Desk. All children are always welcome to join the entirety of our worship service and there is a nursery at the back of the Sanctuary available for use. We have strong safe church policies in place to keep your children safe while they are at church with all children's program volunteers are required to complete safe church training. First Church is part of the Reformed tradition: we are reformed and always reforming. We believe that God continues to speak through the Holy Spirit, and we strive to discern how God is calling us to love God and love our neighbors at this time and in this place. We are guided by the Bible, historical creeds, and the reformed confessions of the Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession, and Canons of Dort.  We believe the Old and New Testaments are the inspired, infallible, and holy Word of God. The Spirit of God directed human authors to write these books so we know who God is and how we can live with and for God in all we do. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21) We believe God is one living and true God who mysteriously exists in perfect community as three equal and fully divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person of God, while having different but complementary roles, has the same nature, characteristics and being, and is worthy of equal praise and obedience. (Matthew 28:19-20; John 1:1-4; Genesis 1:1-2) We believe God created our good and beautiful world and all that is in it. And we believe that God allowed sin and brokenness to enter this world. While that might cause pain and confusion, God never abandoned or ignored the creation. God has worked throughout history to redeem the broken creation, ultimately through the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit continues this work of redemption from now until when Jesus will return to fully restore all of creation to align with God’s righteousness and justice.  In infant baptism, we publicly acknowledge and celebrate the grace of God, freely offered to us before we were even aware or able to move toward God. Parents and the congregation promise to nurture the children with Christian care and teaching, showing them the love of Jesus. When a person who was baptized as a child comes to claim faith in Jesus for themselves, they make a public profession of faith. This is a celebration of God’s action in their lives and a commitment to living with and for Jesus. For those not baptized as children, adult baptism includes a public profession of faith. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38-39; Acts 16:15,33; John 4:42) During communion, when we eat the bread and juice, we remember the life and death of Jesus Christ and celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, bringing life to all. Yet we do more than remember, we also encounter and experience God’s presence and grace through the Holy Spirit. Children as well as adults are welcome to participate in communion and receive this gift of God’s grace. (Luke 22:14-21; Matthew 19:13-14) We believe that as God’s people, we are called to come together to worship and to serve. We value both unity and diversity in the body of Christ, knowing that the diversity of the church is the embodiment of God’s creativity. The Church has the greatest impact when we are able to fully utilize the gifts of all God’s children. At First Church, we strive to be a community that celebrates thoughtful conversations amidst differing viewpoints, knowing that in Christ, all things hold together. (1 Corinthians 12, Colossians 1) God created a richly diverse, God-glorifying world. As fallen people in a fallen world, our sin results in broken relationships and unjust structures; because of this, we lament the racism of the past and its current presence in our relationships and the systems in which we participate. We join together as children of God and servants of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to stand against racism, seek justice, and participate in reconciliation. We strive to live out our call to love and extend mercy to our neighbor, regardless of their citizenship or ethnicity, and to extend God’s welcome to those fleeing violence as refugees.  (Genesis 1, Galatians 3:26-29, Colossians 1:15-23, Revelation 7:9) We invite all members of our church family to full participation in the life and ministry of the congregation. Neither sexual identity nor being in a same-sex relationship will impact a person’s membership or ability to fully participate at First Church. With humility, knowing that our church family holds a variety of interpretations regarding same-sex marriage and some of us are in a place of uncertainty, we trust that our unity in Christ is strong enough to hold us together to further God’s kingdom. (Ephesians 4:1-6, Colossians 1:17) We rejoice that God has given each person gifts to serve within and beyond the church. We affirm and are greatly blessed by women in leadership at all levels of church life. The God-given gifts of women enrich our life together, contribute to the flourishing of our ministries, and enable us to truly live out our calling as God’s image bearers in this world. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Ephesians 4:11-13, Galatians 3:26-29) We affirm that God is the Creator of all things. We rejoice in and celebrate a world that reveals God’s glory, yet we confess we have allowed this creation to be broken through the misuse of resources. First Christian Reformed Church (First Church for short) opened its doors on March 19, 1857, as one of the first four churches in our denomination: the [Christian Reformed Church in North America](https://www.crcna.org/) (CRCNA). [Check out this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4nY8GffnRU&ab_channel=FirstCRC-GrandRapids) that provides a broad overview of our history or continue to read below.  Our story began when members of Second Reformed Church (now part of [Central Reformed](https://www.centralreformedchurch.org/)) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, left to begin a Sunday Bible study in protest of beliefs and practices that they felt were unacceptable. This group joined with similar groups from three other Reformed congregations to form a new network of churches that eventually grew into the CRCNA. Our church started its life in a small building on the northwest corner of Ionia and Weston (close to the present-day Van Andel Arena). Our second church building was also in downtown Grand Rapids, on Spring Street (later renamed Commerce Street). The cornerstone for our third church building was laid in a neighborhood just outside downtown Grand Rapids on October 7, 1911. And while that building has been expanded, redecorated, and reshaped quite a few times over the years, we've been worshiping in the same slice of southeastern Grand Rapids ever since. First Church has always had a penchant for starting things. In addition to the part First played in founding the CRCNA, this congregation gave birth to six daughter churches in Grand Rapids. First Church also played a significant role in the establishment of [Calvin College](https://calvin.edu/) and [Calvin Theological Seminary](https://www.calvinseminary.edu/). Our pastor, Rev. Boer, was called to be the first teacher of ministers in our denomination. His teaching position eventually developed into Calvin Theological Seminary, from which came Calvin College. We praise God for his faithfulness to this church in all the details of our church life and the lives of our church's members throughout the generations. We pray and trust God will continue to use his people at First Church to build his kingdom here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and around the world. God's faithfulness can clearly be seen over the years. Children, Birth to 2 years old, are cared for in the nursery for the entirety of the Worship Service. Alternatively, the Cry Room at the back of the Sanctuary is available if needed! Children, 2 to 3 years old, meet in the Little Lambs room for the entirety of the Worship Service. They will engage in play, song, and a Bible Story! Children, pre-K to 2nd grade, join their parents for the beginning of the Worship Service, receive a blessing from the congregation, and are then dismissed to continue their worship in an age and ability - appropriate way! All children are always welcome to join the entirety of the Worship Service. Children's activity sheets, books, and pencils can be found near the entrance of the Sanctuary!  Middle School aged students meet on scheduled Sunday evenings throughout the year. We pray that the way we minister in our community demonstrates Christ's compassion and commitment to being a good neighbor.  First Church started and continues to support the work of [this non-profit](http://batesplacegr.org/) devoted to asset-based community development in our church's neighborhood.  On Wednesday nights here at First we have volunteers and leaders who administer to a group of children, grades 3-7. They participate in many fun activities like soccer, cooking, art, and music.   It is hard not to be a fan of "FANN." FANN addresses food sustainability challenges and provides space for neighbors to build community with each other.  First Church supports the work of [Living Water Ministry Network](https://www.livingwaterpmn.org/ministry-homes/), a non-profit organization that helps men successfully transition back into society after incarceration. We partner with Living Water to offer a mentoring program that connects men from First with men from the Living Water Ministry residences. A mix of First Church members and friends from the community gather together on Saturday morning to enjoy breakfast and each other's company.  Ready to get in shape while developing relationships with others? Every Monday at 6:00 pm, a group of people join together for prayer and exercise in our church's Fellowship Hall. As broken people, we cannot fix it on our own, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can play a small part in the restoration of God's world to the way he created it to be. These ministries are a few of the ways we participate in this renewing work as a church.   Our Creation Care Team helps our church serve God by being good stewards of the world God created. One recent project this team spearheaded: setting up composting for our church's food waste. Our "Do Justice: Race Team helps us understand how power and privilege lead to injustice and racism. Jesus himself was a refugee when his family had to flee to Egypt to escape from King Herod. If you have a great camping spot, let him know! Tiarra is the hub of ministry at First Church, holding and coordinating the many details that enable ministry to flourish. Outside of the office, she loves to sing and spend time with her 3 daughters. She also enjoys visiting her family in the Detroit area when her schedule allows.  Debbie coordinates our Sunday morning Children's Ministries for kids from birth through 2nd grade. These programs include our Nursery care, Little Lambs, and Children’s Worship. Originally from Kansas, she and David have also lived in Dallas, TX, and in the Chicago area. Miranda plans our worship services with Pastor Adam and supports the many volunteers who lead worship through musical gifts, sound and projection, or readings and prayers. Miranda is slightly obsessed with antique books, cold-brew coffee, steel guitars, and worshipping God!.   Rachel crunches numbers and keeps track of the financial bookkeeping details. She does her job with a warm smile and contagious laughter.  Brittany is studying at Calvin Seminary to earn her MA in Christian Leadership. She is helping us discern how our organizational structures and leadership techniques aid us in being attentive to the Holy Spirit. Cody and Brittany are also working together to give leadership to our high school youth group. Paul ensures that our church building and property is well maintained, hospitable to guests and outside groups, and enables our ministries to flourish. Steve is constantly arranging tables and chairs to make sure that rooms are ready for people to dive into their Bible studies, prayer groups or team meetings. These age-appropriate experiences help children to grow in their relationship with God and deepen their understanding of God's story.  We also believe that the entire church has a part to play in a child's faith formation. Our [intergenerational ministries](/ministries/members) are just as important for children's spiritual development as they are for older church members. Children gather on Sunday morning at 9:00-9:45 a.m. to learn about God. The curriculum is designed to deepen their relationship with God, each other, and their neighbors. For example, children learn about worship by creating and leading a worship time for residents of a senior living center. The [Heidelberg Catechism](https://www.crcna.org/welcome/beliefs/confessions/heidelberg-catechism) takes center stage with grades six through eight. This important and church-shaping document is taught in an engaging way that connects the questions found in the catechism with the issues of today. Catechism meets Sunday mornings before church from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Children ages four through second grade have their own time of worship during the worship service. They gather with their families for the first part of our worship service before heading off to sing, hear a Bible story, reflect through art, and pray. This time of worship is based on the [Children and Worship](http://www.childrenandworship.org/) approach to spiritual formation. Two- and three-year-olds meet together during our normal worship time. Each group meets on the first and third Sunday of every month in addition to a fun activity planned for another day.  Young people in grades six through eight participate in Middlers, which balances the spiritual and social needs experienced in this age group.  In youth group, teenagers (grades nine through twelve) grow spiritually, live out their faith through service, and build Christ-centered community. Some of these experiences may be focused on certain age groups, while others are more intergenerational in nature.  First Church has been blessed with a group of young adults who gather to build community and faith. This group gets together for drinks and appetizers once a month at Brewery Vivant.  In Oasis, women of all ages study Scripture and explore topical aspects of spirituality together. As they study, they deepen their relationship to God and each other. There are three different Oasis meeting times each week to help accommodate busy schedules.  On Thursday mornings at 7:30 am, men gather to go through the passage that will be the focus for worship on Sunday. A lively discussion ensues. Interested in reading a thought-provoking book and then discussing it over breakfast? Every Wednesday morning at 6:00 am (think early bird special), men gather to share their insights on a book chosen to push thinking and challenge assumptions. The goal is to help them become better disciples of Jesus Christ. A group of our more experienced women gather every other week to enjoy one another's company and explore an aspect of faith. This lively gathering reminds all of us of the never-ending depth of learning about God.  Interested in diving deeper into your life with Christ? The love of God bridges us together across generations into one body of Christ.  These small, intergenerational groups meet once a month to share a meal and to pray for each other. They also gather for social events like picnics or movies. While it may not be possible to know everyone in church, our Household groups are safe places to deepen relationships with each other.  Once a month, we gather at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday to enjoy a light meal and hear personal stories that have a common theme. Hearing each other share about the experiences that have shaped life has become another way in which we deepen relationships with each other.  People serve one another by lifting each other up in prayer. Every Sunday, right after the worship service, a small team of people gathers to listen and pray for members who come with their prayer requests.
